Frozen Fruit and Yoghurt Bites

With only 2 ingredients, I barely had to help my 3 year old make these frozen fruit and yoghurt bites. These are great for kids to make. You just need a bowl, a spoon and a novelty ice cube tray. The sensory play with the yoghurt and berries is great for little fingers.

Schedule the recipe

I wouldn’t underestimate the power of preemptive scheduling when it comes to making this recipe with small people under your feet. I have learnt the hard way that putting their “creation” into the freezer for what seems like an eternity to them (ie. 2 hours) may result in tantrums. This is especially common when children aren’t expecting to wait. 

An example schedule you may need to relay to the kids is that

“we are going to….

  1. Wash our hands
  2. Put down a placemat on the table under a bowl and an ice tray.
  3. Scoop out the yoghurt.
  4. Mix in the berries.
  5. Fill the ice tray with mixture using our spoons.
  6. Tap the tray to make sure there are zero bubbles and smooth over the top.
  7. Put the tray in the freezer for at least 2 hours.
  8. Play a game or go to park (insert activity of your choice)
  9. Pop the frozen fruit and yoghurt bites out of the moulds to eat straight away
  10. (My hot tip – optional) Eat these outside or in the bath #embracemess
  11. Put any remaining bites into a container and straight back in the freezer because they melt quickly

Kids will tune out after 4 steps though. So, I highlighted the 4 key steps they will need to know upfront. Multi-step instructions are a really great executive function skill that children learn in the kitchen. I’ve written about others here.

The value of cold foods for kids

Getting kids familiar with cold foods builds their sensory resilience and is achieved through regular exposures. Having something cool to suck on when they aren’t well, have sore teeth, mouths, throats etc. can be beneficial for helping kids continue to eat variety even when they aren’t well. Ingredients

  • 220g Strawberry Yoghurt

  • 1/3 cup Frozen Raspberries

Directions

  • Set-up for your kids to make this with plastic bowls, spoons and the novelty ice tray.
  • Mix the raspberries in with the strawberry yoghurt in the bowls. Transfer the mixture into the ice tray remembering to tap the whole tray so that all air pockets and bubbles are removed. Smooth over the top.
  • Freeze for at least 2 hours.
  • Pop the individual frozen fruit and yoghurt bites out onto a chopping board. Serve where you can enjoy the mess.

Notes

  • Immediately store any remains back in the freezer in a container as they melt quickly.
